International artists criticized for endorsing online entertainment platforms.

KUALA LUMPUR: Following Hong Kong actors like Chen Shanchong and “Baozupo” Yuan Qiu, renowned Korean singer PSY has recently joined the list of celebrities endorsing the online gambling platform FIFO88.

This move has sparked heated debate. In the advertisement, the celebrity promotes the gambling platform, emphasizing “safety, legality, and reliability.” PSY’s FIFO88 ads have been widely circulated on major social media platforms, drawing attention.

Many netizens argue that public figures, as role models, should bear social responsibility and refrain from endorsing platforms that promote gambling. Critics also point out that gambling can lead to addiction and cause family issues.

In response to the controversy, PSY and other celebrities have defended their actions. They stated: “We are endorsing a legal platform, and no one is being forced to participate. The platform also promotes responsible entertainment. Endorsement is a job; we didn’t steal, we didn’t force, and we have no regrets.” PSY further added, “Everyone has the freedom to choose, we are just offering an entertainment option.”

However, this response has not quelled the public debate. Some believe that the immense influence of celebrities may subtly alter the public’s perception of gambling, especially among minors. “The endorsement fee you earn could be someone else’s hard-earned money,” one netizen commented.

On the other hand, supporters have voiced their backing for the celebrities, stating that the gambling industry operates legally, and that endorsing such platforms does not break any laws. “Celebrities are also professionals, and they have the right to choose their work. The issue isn’t with the endorsement, but whether individuals can responsibly control their consumption and choose the right platform,” supporters argue.
